The Cooperative Life
Parents of Belair Cooperative Nursery School have a unique opportunity to participate in the classroom with their children. Children are guided not only by their dedicated teachers but by the committed parents who share in their classroom experience. Parents take turns assisting the teachers during class to help the day go smoothly. Sometimes that means helping prepare materials, other times it means encouraging involvement and redirecting distractions. Parents learn and bring home new, innovative ways to educate their children, as well as get to know their child’s friends.

Parent participation outside the classroom is also essential to the success of the preschool. Parents bring their individual talents when they serve on the Executive Board of Directors or as a Committee Chairperson assigned to one of the many jobs pivotal to keeping the preschool on course. Together they hire the teachers, enroll students, fundraise, and are involved in the day-to-day operations of the school. Parents are also expected to assist with school cleanings and attend the general membership meetings throughout the school year. The children glean an extremely rich and diverse experience because of each family’s involvement.

our philosophy |
Our purpose is to provide children with a group experience that extends the values of family life by fostering a sense of community involvement. It is the philosophy of the school to encourage student awareness of and participation in one’s natural, social, and cultural environment.
The school attempts to provide a program which is appropriate to the child’s stage of development and which is satisfying to him or her. The school introduces the students to music appreciation as well as Spanish. We strive to recognize the unique characteristics and abilities of each child and to cultivate in each a love of learning and a consideration of others. |

About Us
Belair Cooperative Nursery School, established in 1962, is one of the oldest nursery schools in the City of Bowie. Our school is a non-profit, non-sectarian, and non-partisan organization. It has been licensed by the Maryland State Department of Education since 1970. Our school building is located behind the Christian Community Presbyterian Church on Belair Drive in Bowie.
We are a cooperative preschool program where families become actively involved in their child’s education. All families volunteer their time and talents to help our school function and thrive. We offer classes for 3, 4, and 5-year-olds, and boast low monthly tuitions.
